In an effort to improve the tryout process, VNS developed a Tryout Window in 2013 which was intended to:

  • provide all clubs with an equal opportunity to select players.
  • provide families with an opportunity to gather information.
  • provide time for families to make an informed decision.
  • define the season of play for indoor club volleyball.

Season of Play & Tryout Regulations

The Volleyball Nova Scotia season of play begins on the Sunday after the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic federation (NSSAF) Provincial Championship (December 7, 2014) and ends every year on May 31.

FOR ATHLETES RETURNING TO THEIR CLUBS

Clubs have the option to register athletes returning to their club from the previous year starting on November 15 until the day before the tryout period. This would occur verbally (phone/email), but not during an on court session.  Athletes that re-register with a club may be asked to submit club fees when they register. As of December 9, those athletes who did not re-register with their same club are able to tryout for another club team (and/or their old club).  If they try-out with their old club, they no longer have a confirmed spot, meaning they have to “make the team”.

Clubs and athletes are not obligated to utilize the early registration period and may continue to use the tryout period to explore all options.

FOR ALL OTHER ATHLETES

The Tryout Window begins on December 7 and ends on December 19. Clubs can make official offers starting at noon on December 19 but athletes are not obligated to respond until noon on December 20 in order to provide players with time to make an educated decision.

In order to ensure the "Unofficial Offers" are delivered consistently from club to club VNS has created a standard letter (see attached) which is the ONLY method by which a club can make an "Unofficial Offer". Athletes may respond but they are not obligated to.

Click Here for the Unofficial Offer Letter

If teams/clubs decide they would like to hold their try-outs after this period (maybe in January as an example), this is fine, however, they need to be aware athletes may have already registered with other teams.  Once an athlete is registered with another team, they will not be able to switch teams.
