Interested in becoming a Level 1 Referee? 

The online Level 1 Referee course is offered between September 1 and February 28 each year.

CLICK HERE to Register Please note that anyone who completes the course after January 31st will have to wait until the following September to complete the Practical portion of the training. Meaning, they will not be eligible to referee until next fall.

Registration Fee - $160 

  • Registration for the clinic includes your uniform.
  • ​Theory: approximately 6 hours of online content about rule interpretations and game administration
  • ​Practice: evaluation in a formal match (junior high, high school, club) in each of the positions of First Referee, Second Referee, and Scorer.
Shortly after registration, you will receive an email with the first of 4 sessions. 

Prior to being assigned to a match, referees will need to purchase a VNS Level 1 Referee membership and provide VNS with a Police Record Check issued within the last 3 years as well as complete a Safe Sport online e-Learning module.

Qualifications to become a Level 1 (Local) Referee:
·        Be at least 15 years old to take the Level 1 Referee Clinic and be at least 16 years old to be evaluated.
·        Possess the leadership skills to referee and manage the game for all participants
·        Be interested in learning and open to feedback

What can I referee as a Level 1?
·        School - You would be eligible to R1 junior high school matches. As soon as you enter the level ll program you will be eligible to R1 or R2 at high school matches.
·        Club Volleyball – R1 16U Tier 2 and younger. As soon as you enter the level ll program you will be eligible to R1 or R2 at high school matches.
