Conflict of Interest & Referee Assignments Protocol

The Conflict of Interest Protocol outlined below details how Volleyball Nova Scotia will apply its conflict of interest policy concerning referees and their assignments.

Purpose: This policy describes how referees will conduct themselves in matters relating to Conflict of Interest and clarifies how decisions will be made where a Conflict of Interest exists or may exist.

Obligations: Referees will not knowingly place themselves in a position where they are under obligation to any person who might benefit from special consideration or who might seek preferential treatment. This conflict may arise when individuals closely associated with them have a personal interest in a specific match or teams involved.

Disclosure of Conflicts: All referees must promptly disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest to their assignor. This disclosure should include details of the conflict and any measures proposed to mitigate its impact on the assignment.

Prohibited Activities: Referees may be prohibited from officiating matches in which they, their family members, or close associates might benefit from special consideration or who might seek preferential treatment.

Conflict Resolution: In the event that a conflict of interest arises, the referee must recuse themselves from the assignment. Alternative arrangements for assigning referees will be made to ensure fairness and integrity in the officiating of volleyball matches.

Confidentiality: All disclosures of conflicts of interest and related discussions shall be treated with the utmost confidentiality. Information regarding conflicts of interest shall only be shared with those involved in the management of referees.

Compliance and Enforcement: Failure to comply with this Conflict of Interest protocol may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to suspension. All referees are expected to adhere to this policy and cooperate fully with any investigations into alleged breaches.

Review and Amendments: This Conflict of Interest protocol was established on March 15, 2024 and shall be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Amendments may be made as necessary to address emerging issues.
