Insurance
This summary is intended to give an overview of the coverage provided to you through the Volleyball Canada National Insurance Policy. It is not intended to indicate the full conditions, terms or exclusion of the Policy.
Why Liability Insurance?
Because no matter how careful you are, accidents happen. And you can be sued by anyone who claims injury or damages resulting from your activities. You may not be liable, but you will need to be defended in court. A liability policy will pay for this defense as well as any costs awarded against you. In short, liability insurance gives you peace of mind.
Who is Insured?
Volleyball Nova Scotia's Commercial Liability Policy and Sports Accident Policy covers our registered members (Officers, Directors, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Members, Volunteers and Employees) throughout the membership year (September 1 – August 31) but only while acting within the scope of their duties on behalf of Volleyball Canada; Volleyball Nova Scotia and affiliated Clubs/Teams. Spectators are also covered under both the Commercial Liability Policy and Sports Accident Policy.
Recreational League Insurance (Adult Rec Leagues & Youth Rec Leagues)
Do you need insurance coverage for your Recreational Volleyball League?
Steps:
1. Email your insurance request to Jason:
volleyball@sportnovascotia.ca
2. If you require a certificate of insurance (COI) please provide the following information:
League name, main contact, mailing address, start and end dates, list of all facilities that you might be using for training, gameplay or tournament. For schools, we only need to know the school division, not each school’s name AND the specific name of any private facilities.
3. Fees: Our insurance policy covers all registered members in good standing.
- All our membership, program and event registrations on done online on the Volleyball Nova Scotia registration system.
- Memberships are valid from September 1 until August 31 of each year.
4. How to purchase your Recreational Player Membership:
OPTION 1: League asks all players to purchase their VNS/VC membership prior to stepping foot on the court and have the player show the league administrator a copy of their paid receipt.
OPTION 2: Leagues may include the Recreational Player membership fee in their league fees and pay the player’s membership on their behalf when entering them in their league registration form. Either way, the individual will receive a REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION email with their access code (password to login to their personal profile) and manage their membership and future registrations after the league has paid the fees on their behalf. The decision to choose OPTION 1 or OPTION 2 is a decision that the League Administrator needs to make when planning their new league year.
[A registered member in good standing is a covered member while acting within the scope of their duties on behalf of the Named Insured]
5. Volleyball Nova Scotia doesn’t collect any additional league registration fees. Only the per person Recreational Player membership fee.

Activities Covered
Members are covered while participating in Provincial and National sanctioned or approved events. These include competitive or recreational and related activities. (i.e Sanctioned tournaments, clinics, camps and social activities/awards banquet).
Team Travel
Parents and/or guardians are not covered under Volleyball Nova Scotia's insurance policy, including automobile/accident insurance. Coaches or managers are covered – but they are only covered by liability insurance for acts that occur within the scope of their duties as a coach or manager. This does not include coaches or managers acting as drivers for athletes.
In order for all parties to be properly informed, Volleyball Nova Scotia recommends the following:
- Teams traveling to and from tournaments should consider enlisting the services of a professional transportation company to avoid the possibility of personal liability in the event of an accident.
- Parents and/or guardians who are transporting other athletes to and from tournaments should check with their auto insurance provider to ensure this transportation is covered under their insurance policy.
- Parents and/or guardians who are transporting other athletes across an international border (even the Canada-USA border) are required to have a notarized consent letter from the athletes’ parents and/or guardians giving the driver permission to transport the athletes. See the Government of Canada’s information page for more details and a sample consent letter:http://travel.gc.ca/travelling/children/consent-letter
- Volleyball Nova Scotia coaches and managers should not offer to take personal responsibility for driving athletes at any time.
- Parents and/or guardians who permit another parent and/or guardian to transport their athlete should equip the athlete with:
o Medical contact information including health card
o Emergency phone contacts
o An appropriate amount of food/money/clothing for the trip
o Passport (if required)
- Parents and/or guardians who permit another parent and/or guardian to transport their athlete should obtain from the driver:
o Proof of a clean driving record
o License plate number and make/model of the vehicle
o Emergency contact information
- Parents and/or guardians who are transporting other athletes retain personal responsibility for the safety and conduct of those athletes for the duration of the trip – including responsibility for getting the athletes to all games, team events, or practices – or until the athletes’ parents and/or guardians arrive to take personal responsibility for the athlete.
Volleyball Nova Scotia recommends volleyball teams traveling to and from tournaments enlist the services of a professional transportation company to avoid the possibility of personal liability in the event of an accident.
Sanctioned Events
Volleyball Nova Scotia clubs (in good standing) wanting their event sanctioned (thereby ensuring Volleyball Nova Scotia members participating in the event are covered under the Volleyball Nova Scotia insurance plan) will be required to pay a $25 processing fee per event. Events can then be listed as SANCTIONED on our website and a Certificate of Insurance can be provided upon request. In order for Volleyball Nova Scotia to sanction your event, the organizer must ensure that all participants be registered Volleyball Canada Members on the VRS. All other events will be listed as NON-Sanctioned and not covered under our Accident and Liability Plan.
If you would like to sanction your event, please complete the
Program Sanctioning Application.
Unsanctioned Events
Volleyball Nova Scotia’s insurance coverage is only applicable for Open Tournaments, Super Series, 14U Seeding Tournaments, and NS Championships. These events adhere to our Safe Sport requirements, employ certified referees, and follow our tournament standards. Registered participants in these events are covered under our insurance policy.
It is important to note that competitions not listed on the Open Tournaments webpage, and not directly organized by VNS or Volleyball Canada are considered unsanctioned, and therefore not covered by our insurance policy. It's crucial for everyone to understand these limitations and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
Participating in unsanctioned events may invalidate insurance coverage, putting participants at risk.
Certificate of Insurance (COI)
Volleyball Nova Scotia requires all clubs to register with Volleyball Nova Scotia and Volleyball Canada prior to issuing Certificates of Insurance. We ask that the
Club Contact/President of your club complete the online form. Once this form has been submitted and fees paid (Club President Membership role), we will be able to verify this information and email you your club/team Certificate of Insurance for the season.
Request for Certificates of Insurance should be directed to Jason at
volleyball@sportsnovascotia.ca. Please include all facilities that you might be using for training, gameplay or tournament. For schools, we only need to know the school division, not each school’s name AND the specific name of any private facilities.

Sport Accident Insurance
Sport Accident coverage applies within Canada only. Coverage extends to accidental bodily injury or death sustained by an Insured due to external violent, sudden, fortuitous causes beyond the Insured’s control, occurring while the insurance is in force while participating in sanctioned Association events.
**Travel Medical must be purchased for any out of country exposure.**
How long do I have to report a Sport Accident Claim?
You have up to 30 days to report a Sport Accident claim, but you should report as soon as possible by submitting the “Athlete Accident Claim Form” to either K & K Insurance or Brokerlink Inc. You do not have to wait for all your receipts before submitting a claim. Once your claim file has been opened, any receipts can be submitted on an ongoing basis up to one year after the accident date.
If I have other insurance, do I submit my receipts to that company first?
YES, any provincial health insurance or employee benefits insurance plan would be PRIMARY to the Association’s Sport Accident insurance. Therefore, you should submit your receipts to that plan first, but do complete and send the “Athlete Accident Claim Form” to either K & K Insurance or Brokerlink Inc within the 30 days to have the claim registered. Question #10 on the form asks if there is any other insurance in force. This will indicate to K & K that the balance of the receipts not paid by the primary insurer will be forwarded once all other insurance is exhausted.
How long can I claim medical expenses for a sports accident injury?
Up to one year from the date of the accident.
