ShareRichmond BC to host Women’s National Training Team Centre

After an 18 month process, Volleyball Canada has announced that Richmond , British Columbia, will be the host city for the Women’s National Training Team Centre, commencing in January , 2017.
The Halifax Bid submission, while strong, was not selected. Mark Eckert, Executive Director of Volleyball Canada described our bid as “ solid “. We want to thank you for truly stepping up and being a key partner and supporter of the Halifax Bid. Without you, the bid would not have gotten us on the short list, to the site visit and to be one of the front runners under consideration.
The effort mounted by Halifax was truly exceptional, due to the strong partnership and financial contributions that were put forward by the Province of Nova Scotia, City of Halifax, Canadian Sport Centre - Atlantic, Killam Properties, Waegwoltic Club, Halifax Transit and numerous other corporate sponsors. The Halifax Bid would have have provided the Women's National Team with over $1.5 million dollars in support over the next Olympic quadrennial - funding to cover team costs for facilities, training, competitive travel and other lifestyle enhancements to assure a quality training environment. For Halifax and Nova Scotia this funding was seen as an investment that would bring not only exposure to Halifax nationally and internationally, it would have had many more tangible benefits such as providing positive role models for girls to be physically active and to strive for excellence, as well as economic benefits of moving full time jobs to the city and attracting and retaining the 19-30 year old demographic to our city.
The strong bid submission and our competitive advantages shows that Halifax is “open for business” in sport and also that we are considered among the best of the best.
“Halifax is viewed as an important place for sport in Canada. We are home to over 100 national team athletes from 15 different sports. While we were unsuccessful in the bid for the Women’s National Volleyball Training Centre, our sport community will continue to strive and we will be even more prepared for the next opportunity.” Commented Ken Bagnell, President of the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic.
