Howard Jackson was a prominent member of the sports community in Halifax his entire life.

With a passion for volleyball, he dedicated nearly four decades to coaching and officiating. This passion and dedication saw him inducted into the builders category of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 2012.

While working toward his Bachelor of Physical Education at Dalhousie University, Jackson earned his certification for officiating at the national level. In 1983, he became just one of two Nova Scotian’s with international referee certifications.

Jackson passed away on November 10, 2011 at the age of 66, but his memory lives on with the many players, colleagues and students whom he influenced.

To keep his legacy alive, a Howard Jackson Memorial scholarship was launched along with an annual volleyball tournament.

This year, the third Super Series will be run as the Howard Jackson Memorial tournament.

“Howie was an exceptional referee and an even better person. He was a true mentor for all referees,” Said David Fairfax, Regional Officials Chair with the Nova Scotia Volleyball Referees Association. “I’m glad we can continue to honour his legacy with the Howard Jackson Memorial Tournament and Bursary.”

VNS will also be launching a #RespectTheRef initiative in support of referees across the province. The goal is to encourage all players, coaches and parents to show as much respect as possible toward our referees. After all, without them there would be no match to play.
