Looking Back: Coaching Development Recap of 2017

2018-01-12

As we step foot into 2018, it’s important to both celebrate and learn from the year past.

In 2017, VNS trained 67 coaches through 8 NCCP workshops throughout the province which included 58 development coaches, 7 advanced development coaches and 2 performance coaches. On top of that, VNS trained 3 learning facilitators who are now able to deliver our Advanced Development Coach Workshop.

From outside of Sydney in Eskasoni, to Antigonish and all the way to Digby, these 8 workshops were hosted in a variety of different locations all across the province (others include Bedford, Auburn, Millbrook, Halifax & Wolfville) to provide equal opportunity and accessibility for coaches, province-wide.

Volleyball Coaches in Nova Scotia are an amazing group of volunteers to our youth and they  continually strive and demonstrate a dedication to learning and getting better; not only for themselves, but for the young athletes they are coaching and developing.  The NCCP workshop experience presented a great medium and opportunity for them to continue down that path. The workshops provide opportunities to learn from our experienced Learning Facilitators, as well as network with other coaches across the province, share different ideas, experiences and philosophies when it comes to all aspects of the sport and for many, it put them one step closer to achieving NCCP certification.

That said, none of this would be possible without the coaches themselves, who continue to devote another weekend of their lives to volleyball, a sport for which they are clearly passionate, so we thank you all for your engagement, participation and  enthusiasm shown throughout each workshop. You are all the reason our sport continues to grow and thrive in Nova Scotia. We’ve showcased some testimonials below!

Barbara Obrien:
“I wanted to take a moment and give feedback on the workshop from the weekend. It was fantastic! Morgan Snow was inspiring. I went into the course not really knowing what to expect, but knew I had to do this to continue to coach. Kudos to VNS for making this a requirement. I will be honest I wasn’t looking forward to it but buy the end of the weekend I was so happy I attended. I certainly have a different picture painted of what coaching looks like, and understand it is a journey of learning and sometimes failing.”

Sharyn Hiscock:
“Now that I’m home, and had the 2-and-a-half-hour drive to reflect, I just wanted to send a note to you to say thank you for a fantastic learning experience. I’ll admit going into it I was skeptical about the length, it possibly being boring, etc., and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I learned so much in the two days that I can’t even begin to say how much it will help me. As a coach I was beginning to feel like I had taught my oldest group of girls as much as I could but after this course I feel like I have so much more to offer them and I cannot wait to share it. I can’t wait to get back in the gym with them, and all of our girls, and bring some of the practices and principles learned to them. Thank you again for being great facilitators, for answering all the questions asked, and for giving me the confidence as a coach to work and grow our club.”
