Tryout Period

2021-11-16

Everything you need to know about this season's Tryout Period!

In an effort to improve the tryout process, VNS developed a Tryout Window which is intended to:

  • provide all clubs with an equal opportunity to select players.
  • provide families with an opportunity to gather information.
  • provide time for families to make an informed decision.
  • define the season of play for indoor club volleyball.
Communication: Please note that any exchange of information between a club and athlete including Re-signing, Open Signing, Unofficial or Official offers must include parents/guardians.

The Re-signing, Open Signing, Unofficial Offer, and Official Offer letters will be the only way clubs may communicate an offer. These letters have been created to provide all clubs with a consistent message when making offers.

Important dates and timelines:
  • Re-signing Period (November 15 - November 23)
  • Open Signing Period (November 25 - December 3)
  • Tryout Period (December 5 - December 15)
Offer Letters
Re-signing Offer Letter (November 15 – November 23)
Open Signing Offer Letter & Athlete Expression of Interest Form (November 25 - December 3)
Unofficial Offer Letter (December 5 - December 15)
Official Offer Letter (December 16, 5:00pm)

Re-signing Period (November 15 – November 23)
During this period, Clubs have the option to offer spots to players who were members of their club last season by sending them a Re-signing Offer Letter. Players can accept this offer by signing the Re-signing Offer Letter and returning it to the club. Offers expire 48 hours after they are sent.

Open Signing Period (November 25 - December 3)
During this period, athletes should initiate communication with a club to express their interest in joining a team. This should be done by sending a club an Athlete Expression of Interest Form.

We recommend that Clubs advertise the following:
  • how many roster spots are remaining for each team.
  • which positions need to be filled for each team.
Clubs may offer spots to players who did not sign during the Re-signing Period by sending them an Open Signing Offer Letter. Players can accept this offer by signing the Open Signing Offer Letter and returning it to the club. Offers expire 48 hours after they are sent.

Tryout Period (December 5 - December 15)
Players choosing not to sign an offer during the Re-signing Period, or the Open Signing Period will enter the Tryout Period. In-person tryouts can take place between December 5 and December 15.

Please note that for safety considerations, players will only be permitted to attend in-person tryouts for two clubs.

Unofficial Offers:
Clubs can make “unofficial offers” to players during the Tryout Period by using the Unofficial Offer Letter. This letter represents the club's intention to offer the player a spot at the end of the Tryout Period. Players are free to unofficially accept the offer but are not obligated to respond.

Official Offers:
Clubs can make "official offers" to players by using the Official Offer Letter starting at 5:00pm on December 16. This offer is valid until 5:00pm on December 18. Players must reply within that timeframe to secure their spot on the team. Any official offer that has not been responded to by 5:00pm on December 18 may expire at the club’s discretion.

Additional Information
Clubs may not collect any deposits for club fees until the end of the tryout period, excluding a tryout fee.

Teams/clubs may select players after the Tryout Period; however, they need to be aware that athletes may have already joined other teams.  Once an athlete has accepted a spot with another team, they will not be able to switch teams.
