2025-01-12
Joe Duggan was inducted into the Volleyball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame at a ceremony at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish on January 12th, 2025.Joe's lifelong dedication to volleyball has profoundly shaped the sport in Northern Nova Scotia and beyond, creating opportunities, inspiring athletes, and building a legacy of excellence.
Joe’s volleyball journey began in Junior High and continued through high school and as a player at St. Francis Xavier University. After graduating in 1980, Joe combined his career as a high school science and math teacher with a tireless passion for coaching. His commitment extended well beyond the classroom, mentoring young athletes and fostering their growth both on and off the court.
In 1987, Joe established the Wheel Invitational Tournament while coaching high school boys’ volleyball, igniting a tradition of competitive play that thrived for a decade. Recognizing a gap in year-round volleyball opportunities, Joe co-founded the Antigonish Stoirm Volleyball Club in 1999 with help of Trudy Delorey. Starting with just two girls’ teams, Stoírm has grown into a powerhouse program, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024. Joe remains dedicated to coaching and will return to the bench to lead the 16U girls’ team in Stoirm’s 26th season.
Over the years, Stoírm athletes have achieved remarkable success, earning provincial banners and competing at collegiate levels. Beyond the wins, Joe’s impact is felt in the community he has built—a space where young athletes develop resilience, confidence, and a love for the game.
Joe’s influence extends far beyond coaching. As his daughter Alli remarked, “He’s been championing women in sports before it was cool to champion women in sports.” His leadership and vision have set the standard for mentorship, fostering respect and character in every player he works with.
In recognition of his legacy, Stoírm revived Joe’s original Wheel Invitational Tournament as the annual Joe Duggan Invitational, ensuring his contributions are celebrated for years to come.
Joe’s induction into the Volleyball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame honours a lifetime of passion, mentorship, and dedication to the sport. Congratulations, Joe Duggan—you have truly set the bar for volleyball in our community.
